Skin Cancer screening using Dermoscopy.

Skin cancers including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma often start as changes to your skin. They can start as new growths or in precancerous lesions, changes that are not cancer but could become cancer over time. An estimated 40% to 50% of fair-skinned people who live to be 65 will develop at least one skin cancer. Early identification is important. 001TREATMENT OF PRE-CANCEROUS SKIN SPOTS

Some skin cancers start as benign, pre-cancerous lesions known as actinic keratoses. While many of these surface lesions never progress to malignancy, an estimated one in twenty will become a squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. Pre-cancerous skin spots are small, raised, scaly spots that are most commonly found on the face, scalp, arms and backs of hands, areas that receive greater exposure to the sun. As they may also become skin cancers, early detection (by a skin check) and treatment (by a qualified skin doctor) are important.

DIGITAL SURVEILLANCE OF ATYPICAL SKIN SPOTS

Some flat pigmented skin spots have unusual or atypical features without features with melanoma.  We take photos of the spot with a camera linked to a dermatoscope (skin surface microscope), and then repeat the photos in 3 months time.  Melanomas change in their dermatoscope appeance over three months.  If the skin spot has changed then a biopsy is required.

WORKING WITH GPS

We are pleased to accept referrals, and communicate with the patient’s primary care provider.  Referrals from GPs including requests for an urgent review can be faxed on 97956477 or sent via secure messaging with Health Link (ID name is dalyelup) or Medical Objects.
